How it works

Phone lines that change with your call volume

A SIP trunk replaces physical phone circuits with a connection over your data line. Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is the standard that starts, holds and ends each call. A small device at the edge of your network, called a session border controller, translates between your equipment and ours.

Capacity is the practical difference. An older PRI circuit came in fixed bundles of 23 channels, so you paid for your busiest day all year. SIP channels are set in software, so you add channels for a seasonal spike and release them after.

AI-enabled SIP trunking

Connect your phone system to AI in the cloud

BluIP SIP trunks connect directly to AIVA, our AI receptionist. Your existing phone system stays in place, and AIVA answers calls in the cloud without giving up call quality or volume.

AIVA sees the line and location as each call rings. Through our integrations with 2,900+ systems, including Salesforce and service ticketing tools, it looks up approved information and finishes requests inside your systems.

What changes after the move

Fewer invoices, clearer calls

One contract and one invoice

Many enterprises hold several carrier contracts and a maintenance agreement for each site. Moving them to BluIP leaves a single contract and invoice to check.

Add channels for your busy season

Adding SIP channels is a settings change, with no new circuit to order. There is no channel hardware to buy and no technician visit, so you add channels for a busy season and release them when it ends.

Steady audio when every line is busy

Delays and lost data on the line cause the clipped audio people call a bad line. We design the call path to keep delay and data loss low, and uptime is 99.999%. HD voice runs where both phones support it.

Calls keep flowing when a site goes down

Cellular backup is included on every BluIP SIP trunking solution and is the main way we keep your calls up. If a site loses its landline internet connection, calls fail over to the cellular connection. Failover routing can also send calls to another site, a mobile group or an answering point within seconds.

Toll fraud protection built in

Toll fraud is when someone gets into a phone system and runs up expensive calls, often over a weekend. On SIP trunking, protection covers every phone number from the first day, and the same protection comes with our Cloud PBX. Caller ID accuracy and STIR/SHAKEN checks (how carriers confirm a call is not spam) depend on how your numbers are registered, and we set that up before you port.

Our services

Which SIP trunking service fits your business?

The right service depends on who places the calls and how many organizations share the trunk.

Enterprise SIP trunking

Sized and billed per organization, with channels matched to the most calls you carry at once in your busiest fifteen minutes. Routing, local numbers and toll-free numbers are managed together for every location.

Best for: Multi-site operations running one dial plan across dozens of offices.

Wholesale SIP trunks

Pooled capacity for partners and platforms moving traffic at scale, priced on volume. Teams that build their own voice apps can control the trunks through software.

Best for: Service providers and platforms reselling voice under their own brand.

SIP trunking vs. programmable voice

Running a phone system or building software?

The right model depends on whether you are running a business phone system or building software.

Programmable voice platforms suit teams that write their call logic in code and want capacity that scales automatically. BluIP suits a business phone system that has to work at 8 a.m. across 40 sites, with a support team on call around the clock.

When SIP trunking might not be the right fit

BluIP serves North America. For global coverage, choose another provider. Small businesses with a handful of extensions are usually better served by a hosted phone system.

Good reasons to switch

When SIP trunks make the most sense

These are the situations where moving to SIP trunks pays off.

You want AI to answer calls on your current phone system

Your phone system stays in place. BluIP SIP trunks connect it to AIVA, our AI receptionist, which answers calls in the cloud.

Keep your old phone system running for now

Your NEC or Mitel phone system still works, but parts are scarce and maintenance costs rise each year. SIP trunks keep that system running today while our legacy PBX replacement path plans its retirement.

Your contact center routes calls across sites

Queues overflow between sites, outbound calls run in campaigns and after-hours coverage changes weekly. Routing works best when it is set once for every site.

You run Microsoft Teams and need calling

Our product for Teams is Cloud Calling for Microsoft Teams: one calling plan, and you choose how we deploy it. With Operator Connect, you select BluIP in the Teams admin center and we connect your tenant. With Direct Routing as a Service, BluIP hosts and runs the session border controllers in the cloud, so there is no session border controller for your team to buy, run or configure.

You want fewer carriers to manage

Four carriers, five invoices and nobody checking them line by line. Moving the phone lines and the phone system to BluIP leaves a single invoice to check.

How we move you to SIP trunking

  1. 1

    Review your current setup

You share carrier invoices, a site list and access to your phone system. We document what runs where.

  2. 2

    Size the trunks

We count how many calls you carry at once from your call records and set channels against that number.

  3. 3

    Design the routing

The dial plan, failover routing and caller ID rules are written down and approved before we build.

  4. 4

    Start moving your numbers

Number transfers (porting) begin. Toll-free and local numbers often move on different timelines, and you get dated milestones for each.

  5. 5

    Test everything with your team

Call quality, features and failover paths are tested with your team on the staged setup.

  6. 6

    Switch over and keep watch

The switch happens in a planned window outside business hours, with calls confirmed working before you open. The team that built it monitors it afterward, 24/7.

Support

Our engineers fix call problems themselves

BluIP holds 99.999% uptime. Our engineers manage call quality and failover directly, with no other carrier in between.

Every project gets a dedicated project manager. Your wiring and internet phones (VoIP phones) stay in place, and the first phase needs no new hardware. Nothing moves until the tested setup matches what you approved.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about switching to SIP trunks

Days if you take new numbers. A few weeks if you keep your numbers (porting).

Porting is what sets the date. Moving existing numbers is a process between carriers, and the size of the block drives it. Your project manager works to dated milestones, and nothing cuts over until the ports are confirmed.

Contact us for pricing. We share pricing after a short discovery call.

On the call, we look at how many calls you carry at once, how many phone numbers and toll-free numbers you hold and where you place international calls. We quote from your own invoices and call records, and the quote lists minimums and renewal terms.

SIP trunking supplies the lines to a phone system you run. A hosted phone system supplies the phone system too.

Trunks make sense when you have a working phone system and want to retire the old circuits but keep the hardware. A hosted platform replaces both. BluIP offers either one, so the choice comes down to what you want to keep.

Trunks are a service with no equipment to replace, and BluIP handles the maintenance.

With no hardware to wear out, the question becomes capacity. You add channels as call volume grows and release them when it falls. We monitor the trunks around the clock and work on alerts before your team needs to report a problem.

Yes. Our product for Teams is Cloud Calling for Microsoft Teams, one calling plan that you choose to deploy as Direct Routing as a Service or Operator Connect.

With Operator Connect, you select BluIP in the Teams admin center and we connect your tenant. With Direct Routing as a Service, BluIP hosts and runs the session border controllers in the cloud, so there is no session border controller for your team to buy, run or configure. Direct Routing as a Service fits best when Teams users need to share one dial plan with users on other phone systems.

Count the calls you carry at once in your busiest fifteen minutes, then add room to grow.

Total monthly minutes do not tell you this. The busiest moment sets the channel count, and reservation lines, dispatch desks and contact centers peak on predictable schedules. We size trunks from your existing call records and leave room to add channels without a new order.

Calls fail over to cellular backup, which we include on every SIP trunking solution.

Cellular backup is our main failover, and we propose it with every solution by default. Failover routing is also set up before launch and tested during cutover, so calls can move to another location, a mobile group or a queue in our cloud contact center.

Yes. Call-rate limits, blocked destinations and alerts are on by default for every phone number on your trunks.

Toll fraud is when attackers get into a phone system and place expensive international calls, often over a weekend. Limits that trip automatically stop it while it is happening. The same protection comes with our Cloud PBX. BluIP also documents where call records are stored, how long they are kept and who can see them.

STIR/SHAKEN is the system carriers use to confirm a call is legitimate, so it decides whether your calls get flagged as spam.

The originating carrier signs each call so the receiving carrier can check it. The level of trust depends on how your numbers are registered and whether the originating carrier can vouch for them. Branded calling (showing your company name) builds on the same system, so number registration needs to be right before you port.

Yes. Your local and toll-free numbers move to BluIP as part of the migration.

Timing depends on the number type and your current carrier, and toll-free numbers often move on a different schedule than local ones. Your project manager gives you dated milestones. Nothing cuts over until the transfers are confirmed and the setup has been tested.

Look for published uptime, live network status, 24/7 support and a native connection to AI, so calls can be answered in the cloud without giving up call quality or volume.

BluIP holds 99.999% uptime, posts live status at status.bluip.com and supports its trunks 24 hours a day. AIVA, our AI receptionist, connects directly to BluIP SIP trunks and answers calls in the cloud.
